MOOTHON Malayalam Movie Review- An experience on genderless Love

         

         A mirror reflecting Akbar's peaceful face with the camera panning over to his hands caressing his arms and the mirror reflecting a sudden change in his face, erupting moments of joy and tears at the same moment with a blissful music, indicating the new found love, joy and acceptance in Akbar's life, a scene which showcases a director's talent in capturing emotions without words. This is Moothon.

         The plot of Moothon is about Mulla, in search of his brother Akbar, from the serene Lakshadweep to grim streets of Mumbai and how the journey in search of Akbar unfolds through twists and turns. Now what highlights Moothon is the storytelling that just shatters gender stereotypes and its undiluted take on the minorities (not religious), who have often been characterized mostly for a comical note, rather than in a humane way. 

        Rajeev Ravi portrays every frames with a dedication to achieve the zenith of perfection as the story needs the mood. Music by Sagar Desai maintains a soothing effect, especially the last one 'Bikhre' sung by Shashank Arora, which transports me to every character each time the song plays on my player.

        Sanjana Dipu, the new comer as Mulla, will always remain a pain, especially after the last scene. Roshan Mathew proved that he is here to stay whose mannerism is subtle to its core. But the surprise package was obviously, Nivin pauly. It was never expected that this man could actually live to this character, and he just kept everyone spell bounded with his performance. His eyes spoke of two different languages, Innocence in Akbar and Pain in Bhai, just like the character transformed from past to present. 

        The captain of the ship, Geethu Mohandas, deserves a standing bow for presenting such a tale of love, rewriting that romance is purely genderless and its just raw emotions. The directors view on the taboos in the society, leading many to live a miserable life, whose situations never becomes visible to eyes of so called normal society, will indeed be an eye opener for many who continues to stick on stereotypical stories often diluted with masala contents. 

         Moothon will never be everyone's cup of tea, especially for homophobic people. But this one has taken Malayalam cinema to a whole new level of brave and bold storytelling. After stepping out of theatres, the characters kept on haunting, especially Ameer stammering 'Akkk bbarr' with a pain, will remain invisible for a so called normal man.
